In 1636, Gowanus Bay — named after Gauwane, a Canarsee Indian leader — was the site of the first Dutch settlement in what is now Brooklyn. Early settlers harnessed the tidal creek to power their gristmills.
During the American Revolutionary War, Gowanus was the site of the Battle of Brooklyn — one of the largest engagements of the entire war. There's even a playground nearby commemorating the battle.
By the 1860s, the creek had been dug into a full canal. Factories, oil refineries, and gas works flooded the banks — as did their waste, pumped directly into the water through combined sewers.
In the 1980s, the derelict 230 3rd Street — an old 19th-century munitions factory — became the massive Gowanus Memorial Artyard, one of the largest art installations of its era. The Coignet Stone Building next door (one of America's earliest concrete structures) still stands today.
Artists kept coming. By the 1990s, Gowanus had quietly become one of Brooklyn's most vital creative communities — built from the ruins of industry, and the affordable spaces those ruins left behind.
Read the full history on Substack →Dutch farmers settle Gowanus Bay. Named for Gauwane, a Canarsee Indian leader. The tidal creek powers the first gristmills in Brooklyn.
The Battle of Brooklyn is fought across Gowanus — the largest battle of the Revolutionary War. The neighborhood is still marked by it.
The creek is engineered into a full industrial canal. Factories, gas works, and oil refineries move in. Combined sewers dump directly into the water.
The Carroll Street Bridge is built — the oldest retractile bridge in the United States. It still operates today, by hand, using the original mechanism.
Post-WWII decline sets in. NYCHA housing is built to house returning veterans. Industry begins to leave the canal behind.
The Gowanus Memorial Artyard opens at 230 3rd St. Artists move into cheap warehouse lofts. The creative community that defines Gowanus today quietly takes root.
The EPA designates the canal a Superfund site. Cleanup begins in 2020. The Gowanus Canal Conservancy tracks every step and advocates hard for the community.
Powerhouse Arts buys "The Bat Cave" — a derelict BRT power station. It opens in 2022 as a world-class arts fabrication nonprofit.
An 82-block rezoning is approved, triggering the largest wave of development Gowanus has ever seen. The Gowanus Improvement District forms to keep the neighborhood's soul intact.
